Primers
Roof Repair Primers
A primer is a preparatory coating put on materials like roof surface before painting. Primer ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface. These are used to prevent roof from roof leaks and if any roof leak happens then primers are used for roof repair coatings. Primer increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.
Primer is a paint product that allows finishing paint to adhere much better than if it was used alone for roof coatings before applying any roof repair coating material. For this purpose, roof repair primer is specially designed to adhere to surfaces and to form a binding layer that is better prepared to receive the paint. Because roof repair primers do not need to be engineered to have durable, finished surfaces, these roof repair primers can instead be engineered to have more aggressive filling and binding properties with the material underneath. Sometimes this is achieved with specific chemistry, as in the case of aluminum primer, but more often this is achieved through controlling the primer’s physical properties such as porosity, tackiness, and hygroscopy.
In practice, roof repair primer is often used when painting many kinds of porous roofing materials, such as concrete and especially wood roof leaks (see detailed description below). Primer is mandatory if the material is not water resistant and will be exposed to the elements. Roof repair primer is also standard practice with new construction because it seals the roof leaks and provides a material used for roof repair coating. Primer aids in preventing mold. Roofing primers can also be used for dirty surfaces that, for some reason, cannot be cleaned, or before painting light colors over existing dark colors.
Roof Repair Primer is a quick drying, asphalt-based material designed for roof repair priming surfaces prior to application of hot-mopped or cold-applied asphalt coatings, roof cements, and asphalt-based roof leaks repair and flooring adhesives. High penetrating qualities help assure a firm, tough bond.
- Primers have excellent adhesion to concrete, wood, felt, gypsum, plastic, glass, and metal
- Primers forms a tough waterproof seal that will trap and encapsulate dust and other loose particles
- Primers creep into cracks and crevices, then sets up and bonds to surfaces
- Primers provide rust proofing while filling surface pores
- Primers’ each application provides a smooth, even, protective film
Uses: Roof repair primers are specifically designed for roof vent, flashing, valleys and other metal roofing or plastic roofing accessories and used for roof leaks repair. Primers are applied to metal, plastic vinyl, wood, concrete and masonry for roof leaks repair. Do not use primer on asphalt shingle surfaces for repairing roof leaks.
